Biography
 |
LOIS BEUMER - nee Howden, is a Double Diploma graduate of Swinburne
College of Art-Melbourne, Australia, where she was born. On graduating she worked at
Arthur Merrick Boyd Potteries before setting up her own studio in Canterbury and
exhibiting annually at Kozminskys Galleries in Melbourne. She was flattered to
return to Swinburne as a teacher of Sculpture, Pottery and Drawing. Having grown up with
artists in the family Lois was lured back to painting and in particular watercolour. |
After her marriage, Lois lived and worked as a graphic artist in Sydney and later, with
two small children, the family travelled the world and spent two years in Germany.
Since moving to Queensland in 1981 Lois began to specialise in watercolour and is
overjoyed with the opportunities, satisfaction and the success it has brought her. In 1986
she instigated the formation of the Watercolour Society of Queensland of which she became
the Inaugural President for its first three years. She is also a member of the Royal
Queensland Art Society and the Half Dozen Group of Artists in Brisbane.
Lois delightful coffee table book Aquarelle which contains 41 colour
plates was published in 1991 in both English and German.
Lois has held 33 solo exhibitions - seven of which have been overseas. Lois was proud
to be an exhibitor in the silver jubilee exhibition at Gallerie Melnikow Heidelberg in
Germany in 1999. She has had three solo exhibitions at Gallerie Melnikow for which she has
received a critique of acclaim from Dr Heide Seele in the Rhein Neckar Zeitung.
Lois travels annually painting and collecting reference for her work and conducts
workshops and seminars both at home and abroad. She has a natural gift for teaching, is
generous in sharing her knowledge, and delights in demonstrating her various techniques.
She works intentionally in several different styles, adopting the one most suited to her
subject. The inherent spontaneity of watercolour is reflected in Lois paintings as
her passion for this medium intensifies. She delights in the simplification of her subject
matter, be it the broad Australian landscape or the intricacies of European architecture.
Her work has been hung with the RWS in London and with the AWI, Sydney.
Lois has won many art awards including:
Sunshine Coast Art Group Watercolour Award
(1990) - "Golden Fields";
Excellence in Art Award -Traditional, Nudgee
College, Brisbane (1992) - "The Ebullient Sea";
Noosa Arts Award - Traditional (1995) -
